Hyderabad on the cards for new EV unit: Enigma Automobiles


Hyderabad: Enigma Automobiles, an electromobility company, is planning new electric vehicles for the B2C and B2B segment and is considering setting up a new unit in Hyderabad or Coimbatore in order to better develop the southern market.

The company operates its own manufacturing unit in Mandideep, Bhopal, and a collaborative manufacturing unit in Uppal, Hyderabad, which together spans 60,000 square feet and produces 60,000 vehicles per year. In addition to strengthening its R&D and testing capabilities, Enigma will also add a new assembly line in Bhopal.

Enigma plans to achieve 100 percent localization by 2022 and is also working on a self-made lithium-ion battery unit. Up to 3 lakh electric bikes are expected to be sold in India by 2025. To bring new vehicles to market, the company plans to raise funds.

Anmol Bohre, Managing Director and Co-Founder of Enigma, told Telangana Today in an exclusive interview: “To serve markets across India, we are looking for a hub-and-spoke model as it keeps logistics costs down. We are also looking at various battery alternatives. In Hyderabad we already have a collaborative manufacturing agreement and in the next three months we see an opportunity to create a unit for the production of electric vehicles and batteries with an initial investment of 2 billion rupees. “

Regarding the achievements in phases, Bohre said: “We launched our first batch of electric two-wheelers in 2018 and have since introduced several innovations. In September 2019 we set up our first in-house showroom. We had our own experience in sourcing batteries. We researched and developed a clear map of which batteries would be appropriate for EV users in rural and urban areas based on their usage patterns. “

Enigma has so far launched three electric vehicles in India – Ambier, Crink and GT 450 and is launching an electric bike “Cafe Racer” at the price of 1 lakh Rs by March 2022. Cafe Racer will have a top speed of 136 km / h and a battery life of 5,000 cycles.

He added, “We are targeting rural customers and cost conscious buyers with Ambier. Our Crink e-scooter is aimed at those buyers who are conscious of their lifestyle and want to own a retro scooter, while the GT 450 is aimed at millennials who are looking for an aggressive vehicle. We have retained the vehicle and engine configuration of all of our vehicles in order to offer a uniform user experience, with only differences in seat height, ground clearance and load capacity. “

To serve the B2B segment, the company plans to shortly launch a new H1 vehicle (loading vehicle that can transport up to 80 kg of goods) aimed at e-commerce and delivery companies.

The company, which has sold 5,000 vehicles across India to date, plans to open showrooms in Hyderabad and Bengaluru as these markets are promising. Enigma aims to capture a 10 percent market share in the country by 2025 and is also focusing on Tier II and III markets to drive EV adoption and improve accessibility, he added.
