The boring 2022 Lexus ES sedan looks better with new TRD body panels
The current generation Lexus ES sedan is not what would be considered inspirational. It got a very slight visual update for 2022 and is sure to be packed full of tech. There’s nothing really wrong with that, but it doesn’t stand out among a modest selection of sedans in the $ 40,000- $ 50,000 range. Or rather, it goes unnoticed for the right reasons. We’re looking at you, spindle grille.
The ES shouldn’t be a sexy sports sedan. That’s what the IS is for, but that doesn’t mean that the ES has to wither anonymously like so many other Lexus offerings. Maybe that’s why Toyota’s smart TRD group is now offering some optical upgrades for the ES. Fortunately, you won’t find clumps of wings and vents that go too far the other way so often. Instead, we find a collection of components that add a little more visual appeal without screaming about it.

What is available for the ES? Basically, you can get a low-key body kit that adds a front spoiler, side skirts, and a rear diffuser. Aerodynamic mirror covers are available for purchase and cool new spoke wheels in 19- or 20-inch sizes are available. Thanks to overlays for the door switch panels on the side armrests, the interior is not neglected either. All items are available separately. So if all you want is a subtle chin that accentuates the lower bezel, just get the front spoiler. Curiously, TRD does not currently offer a rear spoiler for the ES. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.
There are other things that could change performance just a bit, and we mean a little. Underbody braces are offered to improve stability, and a pair of sport silencers can be obtained at the rear. TRD doesn’t mention any performance increases or sound changes with the muffler upgrade, but they are required if you opt for the rear diffuser. That’s because it changes the lower tail fairing, negating the trapezoidal design in favor of proper quad exhaust trims. It’s arguably the best TRD upgrade on this list of devices.
Speaking of the list, it’s important to note that these upgrades are listed on TRD’s Japanese website. As such, they are intended for the Japanese market, so prices and availability are unknown in other parts of the world. Even so, TRD is at least thinking about the ES, so even if current availability is limited, it probably won’t stay that way for long.
