Toyota GR Hilux on the way to Dakar with Land Cruiser V6 Power
Toyota announces its official participation in the 2022 Dakar Rally. With the name GR DKR Hilux T1 +, the off-road racer has now completed its prototype phase. It will continue to develop into the prestigious off-road motorsport event due to be held in Saudi Arabia on January 2nd.
The drive for the Dakar-bound Toyota GR Hilux is the 3.5-liter V6 biturbo engine of the J300 Land Cruiser GR Sport. The power plant has an FIA-regulated output of 400 hp (298 kilowatts) and 487 pound-feet (660 newton meters).
The V35A V6 is said to be lighter and more torque than the previous Hilux rally racing car, although Toyota noted that the truck’s gross weight was increased to 4,409 pounds (2,000 kilograms) in accordance with new motorsport regulations.
Toyota also revealed some details about the redesigned Dakar racer. The suspension travel is increased from 280 to 350mm while a larger and wider set of BF Goodrich tires is wrapped around a set of aluminum wheels.
The GR DKR Hilux T1 + Racer features Toyota’s latest Gazoo Racing livery, used by the automaker in both the World Endurance Championship and the World Rally Championship. However, the truck will enter the FIA World Rally Raid Championship in 2022.
Toyota will compete in the 2022 Dakar Rally with four brand new GR DKR T1 + versions of the Hilux, led by Nasser Al-Attiyah from Qatar and French co-driver Mathieu Baumel. Dakar Rally winners Giniel de Villiers and Dennis Murphy will return for Toyota along with South Africans Henk Lategan and Brett Cummings. Shameer Variawa and co-driver Danie Stassen will drive the last truck in the fleet.
Toyota will continue development of the GR DKR Hilux T1 +, with the final test taking place in South Africa before it is shipped to Saudi Arabia in early December.
