UAZ in the US: Rugged Russian SUV sells here for around $ 26,000

One place American car buyers aren’t spoiled for choice is in mid-size SUVs – real body-on-frame vehicles, not crossovers. The Nissan Xterra is all but gone, and the cheapest alternative we have today is the four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, which isn’t exactly frugal at $ 34,165. However, those looking for a small, rugged SUV may be intrigued by an option made in Russia with love; the 2022 Bremach 4 × 4 SUV, which starts at just $ 26,405 before shipping.

The Bremach has so far undercut the Wrangler by apparently bypassing the chicken tax Car shovels According to reports, the SUV will be assembled in Southern California. Bremach claims its SUV is “specially designed for America and only available in America”, even though its partner UAZ (a Russian automaker) produces a suspiciously similar-looking SUV called the Patriot. That would date the Bremach to around 2005, though the entire Jeep brand identity wants you to know what’s old isn’t inherently bad.

Jeep is a fitting comparison, as Bremach’s SUV is almost exactly the size of a Wrangler Unlimited, almost as long, an inch wider, and five inches taller. Front coil and rear leaf springs hang its frame over rigid axles front and rear and give the Bremach modest Ground clearance of just 8.3 inches.

Power comes from a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 154 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque, which are boosted by either a standard six-speed automatic on the Chevy Colorado or an optional five-speed manual transmission. The rest is the electronic two-speed transfer case with all-wheel drive, which comes up with a reduction of 2.542: 1 and a lockable Eaton rear axle. Up to 1,157 pounds can be stowed on board as a payload or 3,306 pounds on a trailer. At 13 mpg city and 24 highway, gas mileage isn’t exceptional, and it won’t improve with the pending addition of a V8 option – not that mileage is a primary concern for anyone who drives a midsize V8 SUV.
